Our story and how it all started
1907
Plaza Provision Company is founded in Old San Juan.
1958
James Cimino takes over Plaza Provision Company. At this point in the story Plaza Provision Company already imports a small range of wines.
1958-1990
Plaza Provision Company continues to develop and grow its wine business under the directive of James Cimino and nephew, James Finn.
Meanwhile, Mr Cimino’s son David, expands his passion and knowledge for wine by immersing himself in the Champagne Laurent-Perrier Global Experience.
1989
Jim Finn becomes an integral part of developing the wine business and is a key player in developing the Californian wine portfolio.
1990
David Cimino returns to Puerto Rico to create a sister company to the Plaza Provision Company business, to become a semi-autonomous entity.
Plaza Cellars is founded and is operated within Plaza Provision Company’s facilities in Cataño.
Its team of 15 employees focus exclusively on the wine business, with their hearts set on expanding both the global portfolio and customer base in Puerto Rico.
1999
Plaza Cellars hosts its very first Fine Wine Celebration, with owners, winemakers and representatives of 20 wineries and distilleries from around the world, at the historic Casa Olímpica in Viejo San Juan. Plaza Cellars will celebrate its 25th Fine Wine Celebration in 2026.
Our Founder
David Cimino - CEO
David Cimino graduated from the University of Middlebury, Vermont, with a major in languages.
After college he was employed by Champagne Laurent-Perrier with his training taking place in the Champagne region of France.
Once established as the Southern Californian Brand Representative, he was promoted to the Brand Representative of the Western United States.
Upon relocating to San Francisco, California, to cover all territories of the Western United States and Latin America, David returned to his home of Puerto Rico to found Plaza Cellars.
PLAZA CELLARS
Today
Plaza Cellars is the first wine distributor based in Puerto Rico to offer an E-Commerce platform, providing daily island-wide delivery networks.
Today it thrives in San Juan, with more than 60 employees, more than 30 years in prospering business, and a bountiful portfolio of world-class wines, and Prestige Spirits.
We are proud to be supported by our exclusive on-premise and off-premise merchandising teams throughout the island.
